With two conquered titles and participation in three continental contests, the sensational team of Liga Deportiva Universitaria of Quito (ECU) concluded the 2009 as the team that had more points added in the CONMEBOL Ranking of Clubs.
The university group obtained 77 points for its conquests of the “Recopa” (Cup Winners’ Cup) and of the Nissan South American Cup and its intervention in the phase of groups of the Santander Libertadores Cup, overcoming Estudiantes de La Plata, the extraordinary Argentinean team, champion of the Libertadores and vice-champion of the FIFA World Cup of Clubs by only one point.
The podium of the year was for Universidad of Chile, (32 points) having accessed the Libertadores (it entered the round of 16 beginning from first phase) and the South American Cup (quarter finals). In the fourth place was Cruzeiro (28 points), of Brazil, finalist of the Libertadores Cup. In the subsequent positions were Gremio and Palmeiras that shared the 5th place with 24 points. Seventh was San Lorenzo of Argentina (24) and the 8th spot was for Internacional of Brazil, champion of the Suruga Bank Cup.
In total, there were 58 South American teams that participated in international competitions in the season and have obtained points for the Ranking of Clubs. (Download the document at the foot of this article with the up-to-date charts)
Caracas FC takes the leadership in Venezuela
In what concerns to movements in the highest positions in each country, it should be mentioned that the Caracas FC has been erected as new leader of the Venezuelan classification. The "Reds", an exciting constant in the Conmebol tournaments of the last half decade, have surpassed Deportivo Galicia, Portuguesa and Deportivo Italia.
On the other hand, in Ecuador, Liga of Quito, the winner for the last two years of the Ranking, jumped from the fifth to the second position and in 2010 it can displace Barcelona, the popular Guayaquil club, from the first location. The difference between first and second is only eleven points and everything indicates that Liga will reach the summit next year.
Meanwhile, in Uruguay, Nacional came notably closer to Peñarol and threatens the pre-eminence of the "mirasoles" seriously. The "tri-colored" squad is 34 points apart and, if it stays last year’s tendency, it can dethrone its classic rival.
